Google released Chrome OS in 2011. Now, the tech giant has announced the latest version of this platform called Chrome OS Flex. This updated platform is also compatible with both Mac and Windows programs. Here, we will discuss how the Chrome OS Flex differs from the previous one and what additional features make this platform offer updated.
What is ChromeOS Flex?
Chrome OS is a Linux-based platform Google designed by Google that announced Chrome OS Flex yesterday as a way to convert old Macs and Windows PCs into Chromebooks. It’s funny and breathes new life into older Chromebooks that have reached the Automatic Update (AUE) or expiration date (EOL) date.
Since the start of the launch yesterday, more than a handful of Chromebooks who have not received any updates (EOL) have successfully installed the Chrome OS Flex. So far, there are reports that it is working well on Acer C720, Asus Chromebox CN60, HP, and Lenovo owners.
This process includes disabling firmware encryption in Chrome OS which ensures that the device is not compromised before use. Those instructions vary from device to device, while other related documents come from other Chromebook applications. You may also need to turn on custom firmware (made public). In short, it is not a straightforward process like Macs or PCs.
How to Install Chrome OS Flex on Your Windows PC, Laptop, and MacBook
Additionally, Google officially recommends that you do not use Chrome OS Flex on computers accessing AUE / EOL. The company acknowledges that it works, but will not support:
Google does not support installing Chrome OS Flex on a Chrome OS device that has reached its AUE date.
While you may be able to install Chrome OS Flex on Intel or AMD x86 Chrome OS devices, we do not support devices reaching their AUE date. You may have problems with firmware and hardware compatibility, installation, and updates.
It will likely have implications for performance. The Google FAQ also states that dual-booting OS is not supported. The company recommends using Chrome OS Flex via USB plug-in, although live-boot is also limited to “testing or temporary testing.”
