PHP Monitor 5.0 now available for macOS

PHP Monitor 5.0 for macOS is here

I am very happy with this review. I have never released this great PHP Monitor 5.0 update before, so I had to make sure all these new changes went through a tough test. After a lot of beta and a few candidates were released , it finally arrived on macOS!

There are a lot of new features and improvements to this release: linking to a new folder, a menu service menu, PHP Monitor 5.0 updated site list, real-time configuration changes, automatic Global Composer updates, Customize My Valet and third-party integration.

PHP Monitor 5.0 now available for macOS

A more detailed description can be found here or in the release notes macOS.

I almost thought of calling this version 6.0, but decided that that would be a little confusing. If you would like to see a video of all the changes, watch this video as I go through all the changes.

You can improve as usual by getting started:

$ brew upgrade phpmon

PHP Monitor 5.0 will probably report that your macOS or Valet version has expired, which you may wish to update.

THE RESHUFFLED MENU

THE RESHUFFLED MENU

The first thing you can see is a modified and upgraded menu. Things have changed a bit, hopefully it will get better.

At the top are some very important details: the PHP versions you have installed, and, most importantly, a new section showing the status of the services.

Below you will find the recently downloaded First Aid and Services menu, which I will discuss later.

UPDATED SITE LIST

UPDATED SITE LIST

In version 4.1, I posted the first version of the domain list. This shows you all connected and packed domains. Updated version contains a few improvements:

List of domains is very fast loading and search sounds very fast. You will definitely notice significant improvements if you are likely to have multiple domains connected. Scrolling should also be smooth with butter.
Now you can see the required PHP version for each project. (Only when composer.json can be found in the root directory.)
A small marker is displayed if the project is compatible with the currently linked PHP version. (This can only be considered if the required PHP Monitor 5.0 version can be determined.)
The list is now logically sorted based on a complete project approach.
You can now search for more words. (One space is enough to separate search terms.)

Bonus: When you click on the version number, you will get suggestions for a recommended PHP Monitor 5.0 version to switch to, and you will find out where the translation requirement comes from (requires or from the platform in the composer.json file).

CONNECTING NEW SITE

CONNECTING NEW SITE

From the domain list, you can now link to a new site. This is a feature I was hoping to release with v4.1, but I wasn’t sure if I could do it right.

In this update, you can now do this easily: select a folder, select a domain name, and choose whether you would like the domain protected. That’s easy.

GLOBAL COMPOSER UPDATE

GLOBAL COMPOSER UPDATE

Whenever I switch between PHP versions using Valet, I am often greeted with a message that reminds me to update my reliance on the Designer of the world. This is a good idea if you are using a specific set of tools that need to work with an older (connected) version of PHP.

I was not the only one tired of using this in person, so now I have included it in the app, either as a standalone option, or as a hobby. The setting is actually very cold: it allows you to automatically apply a global developer update whenever you switch to a different version of PHP Monitor 5.0 with PHP Monitor.

SERVICES AND FIRST AID

SERVICES AND FIRST AID

Sometimes things just break, unfortunately.

PHP Monitor is already doing its best to tell you about possible problems when it starts, but sometimes, due to your lack of error, something happens that causes the services to malfunction, and you may find yourself in trouble.

Maybe you forgot to upgrade the Valet, maybe you did not use the global designer review, maybe it was something else.

Either way, if things go awry, you have a few options in the “First Aid and Services” section of the app. The strongest feature is Fix My Valet, which I explain in the next section.

(I also have an important feature set for version 5.1, which will help you adjust your Homebrew folder permissions. Stay tuned for that!)

You can restart various apps in this menu, the status of which will appear in the main menu. If you see “red stuff” (indicator that the service is not working) in the menu, you can go here to try restarting all the appropriate resources.

FIX MY VALET

FIX MY VALET

Sometimes, however, restarting services will not cut you off. If so, it’s time for the nuclear option: Prepare My Valet, or “just fix my” “as I lovingly called this feature during development.

This is a slightly modified “Force Link PHP 8.1”, which you may remember from the previous version of PHP Monitor.

In most cases, following the instructions in these alerts will get you back on track without having to consult the PHP Monitor (or Homebrew’s) FAQ.

INTEGRATION WITH THIRD-PARTY APPLICATIONS

INTEGRATION WITH THIRD-PARTY APPLICATIONS

For those who dream of never touching their mouse, I have good news: I have incorporated most of the PHP Monitor functionality into a new extension protocol (which can be disabled in the Favorites window, if you wish).

I have already built the Alfred Workflow and will be building the official Raycast extension soon.

NO MORE REFRESHING

This is fun: in previous versions of PHP Monitor 5.0, you should always “update” the menu manually if you have made changes to one of the .ini files. Of course, the menu will usually update itself immediately, but now any changes are selected immediately. Have you recently adjusted the memory size found in PHP? You will see that change in the menu immediately. Disable extension? Same story.

There is only one exception: if you manually connect a different version of PHP, it will take the app a little longer to access it. If you use a built-in switch, it will be instantaneous, of course.

CONCLUSION

These are not all changes, but they are very significant. For a complete list of changes, please check the release notes instead.

Oh, one more thing: if you have opened the app about 7 times, or changed it about 40 times, you will see a donation message if the app helped you. You will only see this message once.

The group has been incredibly kind and has already been donated, but I encourage you all to donate if the app saves you time: it helps the app, as it helps me put more time into the app. You can support me here.
